I would pore over weight charts, count every calorie and devour slimming magazines by the dozen. I tried calorie counting, low fat meals, low carb regimes, replacement meals, restricting myself to one or two foods, the egg diet, the grapefruit diet, the cabbage soup diet – anything that offered me a way to lose weight.
And now, twenty years later, guess what? After a lifetime of denying myself the foods I craved in the name of weight reduction, I found myself heavier than ever.

Anyway, being fourteen and a typical teenager, she muttered something about it being a stupid topic and could I help her with it?
For those of you with teenage students in the family, the translation to that particular phrase is "…you do the research and tell me what I should write…. I can’t be bothered as I need to spend my time more usefully on Facebook………"
So I did what every dutiful mother should do………. refused point blank and told her that it was her responsibility to do the project alone.
After a short period of shouting, followed by some gold-standard door slamming, I fired up my laptop and started Googling………!
I can only describe what I found as an Epiphany. My eyes were opened and I could suddenly see just why I had failed to manage my weight for my entire life.
Counting calories is a waste of time unless you know whether they are ‘High Class’ or ‘Low Class’ metabolic calories?
