Meet my Mum, Merle who is one of the strongest, most determined women I know and EVEN SHE was brought to her knees by Macular Degeneration as her independence shriveled up and her world became smaller and smaller.

When we started this journey together…I didn’t know a thing about Wet Macular Degeneration

All of us who love Mum thought it would be easy to help her with this debilitating condition of Age Related Macular Degeneration, AMD.

It was only later that I discovered that many of the things we were doing in the early stages were actively preventing us from helping Mum adapt and regain her independence which was what she wanted more than anything.

After twelve months of frustration, the situation was starting to affect Mum’s relationship with Dad. She states, "I was moody and short tempered. I seemed to be frequently on the verge of tears, especially if I was frustrated with something that had been so easy to do and now proved to be an insurmountable challenge, like pouring a cuppa

What was I doing wrong? How come everyone else could do simple things and I couldn’t? What was wrong with me? And I started to blame my husband and others for being impatient with my efforts and telling me to just go and sit down, and they would do it. After all, things would get done right, without any muss or fuss and so much faster if someone else did them.

Eventually we got all these feelings of resentment out in the pen. We had many long heart to heart talks and ultimately decided we needed to get some answers.

Worse yet, more and more well-intentioned helpful friends told me to go sit down and they would do it. For me, it was still my life and I didn’t know how to vegetate on the sidelines, sitting and waiting. If help meant taking away my independence, then you take away my purpose for living and my joy of accomplishment.
