It was just over 10 years ago and my girlfriend (who is now my wife) purchased me an orchid as a surprise birthday gift. She loved flowers and wanted me to share in her passion, the only problem was I had absolutely no idea what I was doing. The orchid had no flowers or blooms but looked healthy enough in my novice opinion.
I started watering it twice per day and repotted it (which it turns out is not a good idea) but it just seemed to get worse.
You see, I’m a very stubborn person usually and I want to do everything myself. But as everyone knows (and I had to learn) this is a horrible way to advance as a person. My orchid was a big old mess because I tried to do everything myself. It wasnt until I followed someone else’s blue print that things started to turn around for me and I was able to turn a withered plant into a real masterpiece.
I visited local growing grounds and nurseries. I called some names I found in the phone book and asked for their advice. Everything that everyone told me I wrote down and then began to apply. Nothing was overlooked, if something didn’t work I forgot about it and tried something else. After using all of these trial and error methods I was left with perfect, step by step instructions on orchid care. My orchid was looking better than ever!
Now, you might think the above story was a fluke… But I actually tried some of my orchid care secrets on some friends plants. You see I got into the habit of giving friends orchids for presents (just like my wife did for me). The problem was though that my friends had the same passion I did, but not the knowledge.
